Narrative:

Aircraft fuel system failure: climbing through 12000FT; left engine fuel filter advisory message on upper EICAS. A few minutes later the message became a status message on the lower EICAS screen. We referred to QRH. Aircraft diverted to a nearby airport. An emergency was declared. An uneventful overweight landing was made. The airfield rescue and fire fighters were waiting to inspect the aircraft. After the inspection the aircraft taxied to the gate. The lh fuel filter and fuel filter differential bypass switch was replaced. Overweight inspection was completed. Aircraft continued to the scheduled destination.
