Narrative:
Iah. Upon arriving at aircraft, logbook was checked and maintenance called about a placard in regard to the led. The maintenance person advised us that we were ok to go after he reviewed the log and had verified that the flaps retracted (#2 led) properly. We flew to phl. After arriving it was brought to our attention that the aircraft may be overdue on a check. The mechanic called supervisor at lax maintenance control to inform him that the log did not indicate that an a check was done. After their conversation, the mechanic told us that supervisor said it was ok to fly to den. We were not going west/O a written message from maintenance. Maintenance and dispatch finally notified the flight was cancelled. Upon further evaluation of the logbook, it appears that both the a check and service C checks were not done within the required amount of time prior to our flight from iah-phl. Cause: improper evaluation and record keeping by maintenance. Corrective action: better records.

Title: ACR MLG FLEW A SCHEDULED PASSENGER FLT WITHOUT PROPER MAINTENANCE CHECKS BEING COMPLETED AND SIGNED OFF.
Narrative: IAH. UPON ARRIVING AT ACFT, LOGBOOK WAS CHKED AND MAINT CALLED ABOUT A PLACARD IN REGARD TO THE LED. THE MAINT PERSON ADVISED US THAT WE WERE OK TO GO AFTER HE REVIEWED THE LOG AND HAD VERIFIED THAT THE FLAPS RETRACTED (#2 LED) PROPERLY. WE FLEW TO PHL. AFTER ARRIVING IT WAS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTN THAT THE ACFT MAY BE OVERDUE ON A CHK. THE MECH CALLED SUPVR AT LAX MAINT CTL TO INFORM HIM THAT THE LOG DID NOT INDICATE THAT AN A CHK WAS DONE. AFTER THEIR CONVERSATION, THE MECH TOLD US THAT SUPVR SAID IT WAS OK TO FLY TO DEN. WE WERE NOT GOING W/O A WRITTEN MESSAGE FROM MAINT. MAINT AND DISPATCH FINALLY NOTIFIED THE FLT WAS CANCELLED. UPON FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE LOGBOOK, IT APPEARS THAT BOTH THE A CHK AND SVC C CHKS WERE NOT DONE WITHIN THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF TIME PRIOR TO OUR FLT FROM IAH-PHL. CAUSE: IMPROPER EVALUATION AND RECORD KEEPING BY MAINT. CORRECTIVE ACTION: BETTER RECORDS.
