Narrative:
[I was] cleared for RNAV GPS 7R approach. On approach between IAF and FAF simulated partial panel approach. [I] zoomed in mfd to view course deviation due to pfd being dimmed to simulate failure. Lost situational awareness and descended to 700 ft when should have been at 1;600 ft. Warned by ATC and climbed back to altitude.

Title: A pilot and his instructor doing a simulated partial panel approach in a C172SP NAVIII became distracted by the advanced navigation and descended to 700 FT when the approach segment altitude was 1;600 FT. ATC alerted the pilots who then climbed back to the proper altitude.
