Narrative:

I was working aircraft to inspect a crack in panel (412 dl) left engine pylon; tried to gain access on several ladders but could not get a good look at the panel. With that; I was thinking that I could get a better view and access to the area to be inspected by going over the left wing. Here my lack of awareness led me to think it was O.K. To remove the left emergency exit door. I removed the handle cover and did not notice the 'slide armed' light. Then proceeded to open the door and inadvertently deployed the slide. [I] reported to my supervisor the slide deployment. [One must] think think think about what you're doing!!!!
