Narrative:
During taxi out in dfw, we made a wrong turn on the taxiway and onto runway 17R, which was the active runway. We departed the airliner ramp area at taxiway 28 with taxi instructions from ground control of 'inner - 27 - outer to runway 17R.' instead of making an immediate left on the inner taxiway, we continued straight ahead to the outer taxiway and then turned left on the outer taxiway (believing that we were on the inner taxiway), then right on taxiway 27 and onto runway 17R. We notified ground control that we were on runway 17R by mistake and we cleared 17R as expeditiously as possible. We received a new clearance to taxi to 17R and continued the flight. I believe the following to be contributing factors. The lighting at taxiway 28 departing ramp on the inner taxiway is extremely poor, especially on the ramp side of the inner taxiway. There is continuous construction going on with all the associated lights that add to the confusion. I feel the lighting on the inner taxiway near both air carrier X and air carrier Y ramp areas needs to be improved. The first blue lights that can be seen departing the ramp area at taxiway 28 are on the outer taxiway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG UNAUTH RWY ENTRY AT DFW.
Narrative: DURING TAXI OUT IN DFW, WE MADE A WRONG TURN ON THE TXWY AND ONTO RWY 17R, WHICH WAS THE ACTIVE RWY. WE DEPARTED THE AIRLINER RAMP AREA AT TXWY 28 WITH TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND CTL OF 'INNER - 27 - OUTER TO RWY 17R.' INSTEAD OF MAKING AN IMMEDIATE LEFT ON THE INNER TXWY, WE CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD TO THE OUTER TXWY AND THEN TURNED LEFT ON THE OUTER TXWY (BELIEVING THAT WE WERE ON THE INNER TXWY), THEN RIGHT ON TXWY 27 AND ONTO RWY 17R. WE NOTIFIED GND CTL THAT WE WERE ON RWY 17R BY MISTAKE AND WE CLRED 17R AS EXPEDITIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE. WE RECEIVED A NEW CLRNC TO TAXI TO 17R AND CONTINUED THE FLT. I BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING TO BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. THE LIGHTING AT TXWY 28 DEPARTING RAMP ON THE INNER TXWY IS EXTREMELY POOR, ESPECIALLY ON THE RAMP SIDE OF THE INNER TXWY. THERE IS CONTINUOUS CONSTRUCTION GOING ON WITH ALL THE ASSOCIATED LIGHTS THAT ADD TO THE CONFUSION. I FEEL THE LIGHTING ON THE INNER TXWY NEAR BOTH ACR X AND ACR Y RAMP AREAS NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED. THE FIRST BLUE LIGHTS THAT CAN BE SEEN DEPARTING THE RAMP AREA AT TXWY 28 ARE ON THE OUTER TXWY.
