Narrative:
Company B767-300 had [EICAS] oil filter message. Contract maintenance replaced filter and housing packing next day (no parts at station); [because they] had to be flown in. Aircraft maintenance manual (amm) 79-21-05 page xxa says to remove drain plug (16) and [O-ring] packing (13). [I] believe this is an amm error; because item (13) is for oil filter housing. Amm never states to remove drain plug [O-ring] packing (15). Contacted company engineering and they wrote an engineering order (east/O) to inspect current drain plug (15) [O-ring] packing and reuse if no defects found. Amm 79-21-10 page xxb; item 'east' was reviewed for same issue.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A Maintenance Controller reports a discrepancy found in their Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) 79-21-05 during an oil filter change on a PW-4000 engine for a B767-300 with an EICAS oil filter message. The AMM illustration mistakenly associates the oil filter housing O-ring packing with the oil filter housing drain plug.
