Narrative:

Assigned altitude of 8000' by monterey approach control. I was preoccupied with looking for the airport. My first officer was flying. He too became occupied looking for the airport and descended to 7700'. We quickly climbed back to 8000' and continued the flight. We were at 7700' for no more than a second. At approximately 10 mi final at 4600 we came very close (400') to another aircraft, an small aircraft. We were given traffic reports concerning this aircraft however by the time we saw it we had to make a hard right turn in order to avoid it.
