Narrative:
During takeoff the landing gear retracted normally when commanded to the retract position. All three gear door amber lights remained illuminated. The motor could be heard running as we completed the climb checklist. To stop the motor from running as we continued to climb; I re-selected the gear to the extended position. The gear extended normally and all amber door lights extinguished. The QRH was then consulted and had two separate; but similar procedures for the condition at hand; recommending a manual extension; however; and the gear had already been extended using normal procedures and a manual extension was not necessary. We were instructed via radio from operations to divert per dispatcher's instructions. An ACARS message was received from dispatch authorizing the diversion. The flight landed safely without further incident.
