Narrative:
During climb out passing FL290 we noticed the left CSD oil temp was above the red line. We started the CSD oil temp high checklist and tried to start the APU. When the APU would not start passing FL300 we requested FL290. We disconnected the left CSD and tried the APU again at FL290 and FL270 with no success. We then called dispatch and told him we would be returning to our departure airport because we could not get the APU started and the weather at our destination would be IMC. We declared an emergency and turned toward back. During the descent and below FL250 we tried the APU and this time it started. We continued our return as an emergency and landed with out any other problems. Landing weight was 125;000 pounds.

Title: An air carrier flight crew opted to return to their departure airport when they were unable to start the APU after high left CSD oil temperature required them to disconnect the CSD and its associated generator was lost.
