Narrative:
[We were] given visual approach to runway xxr. [We] proceeded to a left base [and] while passing [runway] xxl; tower asked if we could take [runway] xxl. We said no. Tower then said there was an aircraft ahead and to the right of us approaching from the northwest not talking to him and we might have to go around. We proceeded to intercept and turn final. Tower was still trying to contact the other aircraft and we were starting to get [too close] for my comfort; so we elected to go around after turning final even though the other plane appeared to be behind; [but] we never saw him. Tower asked if we were going around prior to us telling him. In the middle of all this; the master fire cargo fire lights and bell went off for less than 15 seconds. We declared an emergency; landed; worked with the fire department and nothing found. [We] would have appreciated more info from tower when he first asked us to turn.
