Narrative:
An FAA flight service safety inspector boarded to ride our jumpseat from situation to anc via jnu. The copilot was returning from operations after getting a WX update. I didn't get the opportunity to brief the copilot privately to be sure and do things 'by the book.' on the after start checklist the copilot, instead of reading the checklist, relied on memory. I didn't want to call attention to his failure to actually read the list, so got his attention and quietly motioned for him to read the list. On the climb out the copilot made some unnecessary comments below 10000'. I again got his attention and motioned for him to be quiet. I feel it is awkward to have any FAA personnel in the jumpseat because it reduces the chance of any crew member bringing up or chastising another crew member for noticed violations of the far's. You hope the jumpseater won't notice and you can criticize others later in privacy.
