Narrative:
On 1/fri/02 at approximately XA00 on a VFR (flight following by our own base) while passing around special use airspace at 3500 ft MSL using garmin GPS 530 data card dgrm 72. I was flying while the PIC was navigating. The restr area was depicted and we circumnavigated it. At approximately XA15 an F16 intercepted our aircraft overhead. Following procedure, we listened on 121.5 MHZ without contact. While passing ZZZ approach en route to ZZZ1, we confirmed our fuel stop at ZZZ1. At ZZZ1 airport, we were interviewed by the secret service. At approximately XF05 we departed for ZZZ2 airport full stop. We honestly felt the restr airspace was sufficiently avoided and we had no intention to 'test' or alarm anyone. The mission was to ferry the aircraft from ZZZ3 to ZZZ4. The aircraft and avionics is new and the garmin graphics are detailed according to scale. I believe that a larger 'buffer' would have avoided this alert. Supplemental information from acn 536433: approaching and arcing around special use airspace (as depicted on the moving map display) an F15 twice flew by the aircraft on the right side. Upon landing at our fuel stop ZZZ1 at XB00, we were met, interviewed and released by local and fed authorities. Departure from ZZZ1 was at XF05 with a final landing at ZZZ2 at XG30. Apparently in these times of heightened security and alertness, we strayed too close to the boundaries of special use airspace.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SMT CREW VIOLATED 'SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE' IN THE FORM OF A PROHIBITED AREA.
Narrative: ON 1/FRI/02 AT APPROX XA00 ON A VFR (FLT FOLLOWING BY OUR OWN BASE) WHILE PASSING AROUND SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE AT 3500 FT MSL USING GARMIN GPS 530 DATA CARD DGRM 72. I WAS FLYING WHILE THE PIC WAS NAVIGATING. THE RESTR AREA WAS DEPICTED AND WE CIRCUMNAVIGATED IT. AT APPROX XA15 AN F16 INTERCEPTED OUR ACFT OVERHEAD. FOLLOWING PROCEDURE, WE LISTENED ON 121.5 MHZ WITHOUT CONTACT. WHILE PASSING ZZZ APCH ENRTE TO ZZZ1, WE CONFIRMED OUR FUEL STOP AT ZZZ1. AT ZZZ1 ARPT, WE WERE INTERVIEWED BY THE SECRET SERVICE. AT APPROX XF05 WE DEPARTED FOR ZZZ2 ARPT FULL STOP. WE HONESTLY FELT THE RESTR AIRSPACE WAS SUFFICIENTLY AVOIDED AND WE HAD NO INTENTION TO 'TEST' OR ALARM ANYONE. THE MISSION WAS TO FERRY THE ACFT FROM ZZZ3 TO ZZZ4. THE ACFT AND AVIONICS IS NEW AND THE GARMIN GRAPHICS ARE DETAILED ACCORDING TO SCALE. I BELIEVE THAT A LARGER 'BUFFER' WOULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS ALERT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 536433: APCHING AND ARCING AROUND SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE (AS DEPICTED ON THE MOVING MAP DISPLAY) AN F15 TWICE FLEW BY THE ACFT ON THE R SIDE. UPON LNDG AT OUR FUEL STOP ZZZ1 AT XB00, WE WERE MET, INTERVIEWED AND RELEASED BY LCL AND FED AUTHORITIES. DEP FROM ZZZ1 WAS AT XF05 WITH A FINAL LNDG AT ZZZ2 AT XG30. APPARENTLY IN THESE TIMES OF HEIGHTENED SECURITY AND ALERTNESS, WE STRAYED TOO CLOSE TO THE BOUNDARIES OF SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE.
