Narrative:
We were 'cleared to land, runway 09R. Cleared to roll out to the end.' other aircraft was cleared to land on runway 12, hold short of runway 09R. Upon landing and rollout we saw the runway end markings approaching and started a left turn off toward the ramp area. Unfortunately this area was also the end of runway 12 and we ended up head on to the landing large transport before exiting to the ramp. Fortunately, both aircraft were at taxi speed and no immediate action had to be taken. Our error was turning at the runway end rather than continuing up the 09R overrun to its end before turning off. If the tower instructions had been more explicit, citing the overrun availability, we might have avoided this error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LNDG ACR-LGT TURNED ONTO INTERSECTING ACTIVE RWY HEAD ON TO LNDG ACR LGT.
Narrative: WE WERE 'CLRED TO LAND, RWY 09R. CLRED TO ROLL OUT TO THE END.' OTHER ACFT WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 12, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 09R. UPON LNDG AND ROLLOUT WE SAW THE RWY END MARKINGS APCHING AND STARTED A LEFT TURN OFF TOWARD THE RAMP AREA. UNFORTUNATELY THIS AREA WAS ALSO THE END OF RWY 12 AND WE ENDED UP HEAD ON TO THE LNDG LGT BEFORE EXITING TO THE RAMP. FORTUNATELY, BOTH ACFT WERE AT TAXI SPD AND NO IMMEDIATE ACTION HAD TO BE TAKEN. OUR ERROR WAS TURNING AT THE RWY END RATHER THAN CONTINUING UP THE 09R OVERRUN TO ITS END BEFORE TURNING OFF. IF THE TWR INSTRUCTIONS HAD BEEN MORE EXPLICIT, CITING THE OVERRUN AVAILABILITY, WE MIGHT HAVE AVOIDED THIS ERROR.
