Narrative:
We departed with an illegal dispatch. We were using the new sabre flight plan and as we were approaching what we thought were our first etp's. I began to realize that we didn't have what we were accustomed to in the old system as etp's. We were 138 minutes ETOPS. We believed yyr and snn were our ETOPS alternates and that kef was not recommended due to temperature moderate snow pellets. As far as I knew we were legal at that time. I didn't know it was an illegal dispatch until I was notified when the relief pilot asked a sabre instructor a few questions and he said we didn't have the critical fuel scenario for our etp making this illegal. He asked because we had a discussion in flight about this and it raised questions we weren't sure what the answers were. I think this is once again poor training and dealing with many procedural and flight planning changes.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: Air Carrier flight crew reports an illegal ETOPS dispatch due to misunderstanding a new Sabre flight planning document. The crew was dispatched under 138 minute ETOPS and may have required three alternates and two ETP's.
