Fuel usage too high. Engine quit while on right tank prematurely. Left tank already used to minimum level. Looked for suitable landing area. Should have timed fuel gauge movement and observed increased fuel usage to determine fuel was porting overboard.

Title: An M20 pilot landed off airport short of destination due to fuel exhaustion. An apparent fuel leak went undetected causing much higher than expected fuel consumption.
