Narrative:
Flight was cleared by ground control to go into position and hold, runway 36. As we taxied our checklist was performed. During the checklist the ground controller read our clearance and the f-o responded then returned and the checklist was completed. Upon reaching the end of the runway I turned the aircraft to prepare for takeoff and aligned with the runway centerline. I told the first officer, whose turn it was to fly, that the aircraft was now his. He called for 'propellers and fuel up.' this is a sign that he was ready and I pushed the propellers and fuel up and a normal takeoff was executed. At about 1000' AGL another voice came on the frequency and said 'cleared for takeoff, contact departure, good day.' I responded 'good day' realizing only then what had happened. I feel that the ground control should not have cleared us into position and hold. If we had waited on the taxiway until the checks were completed, then contacted tower, I don't feel this would have happened.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TKOF WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED BY GND CTL TO GO INTO POS AND HOLD, RWY 36. AS WE TAXIED OUR CHKLIST WAS PERFORMED. DURING THE CHKLIST THE GND CTLR READ OUR CLRNC AND THE F-O RESPONDED THEN RETURNED AND THE CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED. UPON REACHING THE END OF THE RWY I TURNED THE ACFT TO PREPARE FOR TKOF AND ALIGNED WITH THE RWY CENTERLINE. I TOLD THE F/O, WHOSE TURN IT WAS TO FLY, THAT THE ACFT WAS NOW HIS. HE CALLED FOR 'PROPS AND FUEL UP.' THIS IS A SIGN THAT HE WAS READY AND I PUSHED THE PROPS AND FUEL UP AND A NORMAL TKOF WAS EXECUTED. AT ABOUT 1000' AGL ANOTHER VOICE CAME ON THE FREQ AND SAID 'CLRED FOR TKOF, CONTACT DEP, GOOD DAY.' I RESPONDED 'GOOD DAY' REALIZING ONLY THEN WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I FEEL THAT THE GND CTL SHOULD NOT HAVE CLRED US INTO POS AND HOLD. IF WE HAD WAITED ON THE TXWY UNTIL THE CHKS WERE COMPLETED, THEN CONTACTED TWR, I DON'T FEEL THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.
