Narrative:
Flight departed islip, ny, 12/88 IFR to rdv. Flight plan was to beads intersection, J174 to snow hill, etc. IFR clearance was received as planned. Numerous vectors were given by ny departure after takeoff. One was 'turn right, 180 degrees, intercept V139.' at that point (I, captain, flying) I presumed it was to intercept the radial to beads from calverton intersection, but the heading relationship to our current heading didn't seem right. The first officer likewise sensed some confusion. We read back clearance and by the time we idented V139 we were receiving additional vectors because we in fact had flown through assigned victor arwy. Then we had discovered that V139 was essentially coincident with the jet arwy we were planning and prepared for (differed by only 2 degrees). We were still climbing and below 10000'. My summary of flight crew errors: non compliance to last clearance and arwy excursion. Why: not instantly conversant with low altitude arwy designation, having planned and been cleared in reference to jet arwy. Conclusions/recommendations: to crew: be prepared to relate to low altitude arwy structure when in it, regardless of clearance and flight plan. To ATC: specify low altitude arwys to be references in ATC clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FAILED TO COMPLY WITH CLRNC TO INTERCEPT VICTOR AIRWAY.
Narrative: FLT DEPARTED ISLIP, NY, 12/88 IFR TO RDV. FLT PLAN WAS TO BEADS INTXN, J174 TO SNOW HILL, ETC. IFR CLRNC WAS RECEIVED AS PLANNED. NUMEROUS VECTORS WERE GIVEN BY NY DEP AFTER TKOF. ONE WAS 'TURN RIGHT, 180 DEGS, INTERCEPT V139.' AT THAT POINT (I, CAPT, FLYING) I PRESUMED IT WAS TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL TO BEADS FROM CALVERTON INTXN, BUT THE HDG RELATIONSHIP TO OUR CURRENT HDG DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT. THE F/O LIKEWISE SENSED SOME CONFUSION. WE READ BACK CLRNC AND BY THE TIME WE IDENTED V139 WE WERE RECEIVING ADDITIONAL VECTORS BECAUSE WE IN FACT HAD FLOWN THROUGH ASSIGNED VICTOR ARWY. THEN WE HAD DISCOVERED THAT V139 WAS ESSENTIALLY COINCIDENT WITH THE JET ARWY WE WERE PLANNING AND PREPARED FOR (DIFFERED BY ONLY 2 DEGS). WE WERE STILL CLBING AND BELOW 10000'. MY SUMMARY OF FLT CREW ERRORS: NON COMPLIANCE TO LAST CLRNC AND ARWY EXCURSION. WHY: NOT INSTANTLY CONVERSANT WITH LOW ALT ARWY DESIGNATION, HAVING PLANNED AND BEEN CLRED IN REF TO JET ARWY. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: TO CREW: BE PREPARED TO RELATE TO LOW ALT ARWY STRUCTURE WHEN IN IT, REGARDLESS OF CLRNC AND FLT PLAN. TO ATC: SPECIFY LOW ALT ARWYS TO BE REFERENCES IN ATC CLRNC.
