Narrative:
We had just taken off runway 1L at sfo. The tower switched us to departure control on 135.1. We noted a company aircraft Y crossing at 12 O'clock high moving toward 10 O'clock. We confirmed with the controller that we had company out of 3000' (we were out of 2000'). His transmission was then covered. After a third attempt we copied 'level at 4000'.' we verified that we were to level at 4000' and we watched company pass comfortably off to the left at about the same altitude. The controller gave us a heading to intercept the pye 135 degree right and we read back. He was cut out, then he asked if we had started our turn at 4 DME (porte departure) off of sfo. We then realized that while we had been watching company's maneuvers with some concern, we had overshot the left turn point. Definitely an error on our part. We wouldn't have started the turn in any case due to the proximity ot our company aircraft. However, we should have requested the deviation.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG ON PORTE DEP OUT OF SFO FAILED TO OBSERVE THE 4 MILE ARC.
Narrative: WE HAD JUST TAKEN OFF RWY 1L AT SFO. THE TWR SWITCHED US TO DEP CTL ON 135.1. WE NOTED A COMPANY ACFT Y XING AT 12 O'CLOCK HIGH MOVING TOWARD 10 O'CLOCK. WE CONFIRMED WITH THE CTLR THAT WE HAD COMPANY OUT OF 3000' (WE WERE OUT OF 2000'). HIS XMISSION WAS THEN COVERED. AFTER A THIRD ATTEMPT WE COPIED 'LEVEL AT 4000'.' WE VERIFIED THAT WE WERE TO LEVEL AT 4000' AND WE WATCHED COMPANY PASS COMFORTABLY OFF TO THE LEFT AT ABOUT THE SAME ALT. THE CTLR GAVE US A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE PYE 135 DEG R AND WE READ BACK. HE WAS CUT OUT, THEN HE ASKED IF WE HAD STARTED OUR TURN AT 4 DME (PORTE DEP) OFF OF SFO. WE THEN REALIZED THAT WHILE WE HAD BEEN WATCHING COMPANY'S MANEUVERS WITH SOME CONCERN, WE HAD OVERSHOT THE LEFT TURN POINT. DEFINITELY AN ERROR ON OUR PART. WE WOULDN'T HAVE STARTED THE TURN IN ANY CASE DUE TO THE PROX OT OUR COMPANY ACFT. HOWEVER, WE SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED THE DEVIATION.
