Narrative:
During initial approach we selected flaps 1 and the flaps and slats both failed to extend. We declared an emergency; complied with the QRH procedure; advised company operations; sent a message to dispatch via ACARS; and landed uneventfully with slats only. We cleared the runway; had both the arff and maintenance check the aircraft for damage and/or hot brakes/tires; all of which were normal. Taxied to the gate.
