Narrative:
Company manual said 'contact air carrier Y ramp for pushback clearance'. (We are not part of air carrier Y.) I called air carrier Y ramp. The reply was 'pushback approved, contact lga ground for taxi'. After pushback, while monitoring ground, the ground controller said 'large transport on taxiway Z, say call sign'. I gave it to him and he chewed us out for pushing back on his active taxiway. I replied that 'air carrier Y ramp had given us permission to push back'. Problem arose from poorly worded company manual.
