Narrative:
While holding short of runway 8 on taxiway A1, air carrier P xx ab received tower transmission to position and hold runway 8. (All 3 crew members heard the transmission.) the first officer read back the clearance 'air carrier P xx ab position and hold'. This readback was not challenged, however while taking position (approximately 90 degree to line up) tower questioned us as to our presence on the active runway. Understanding to have been cleared into position, the tower controller informed us that the clearance was for commuter X ab. We were instructed to taxi clear of the active while commuter X ab was cleared for takeoff. (They had been holding short of a taxiway further down the runway.) they departed, we taxied back to the hold short line, and commuter X ab landed. We were then reclred into position. Both tower controller and crew members acknowledge a miscom due to similar call signs, however we maintain that it was our aircraft which was cleared into position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT UNAUTH RWY ENTRY.
Narrative: WHILE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 8 ON TXWY A1, ACR P XX AB RECEIVED TWR XMISSION TO POSITION AND HOLD RWY 8. (ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS HEARD THE XMISSION.) THE F/O READ BACK THE CLRNC 'ACR P XX AB POSITION AND HOLD'. THIS READBACK WAS NOT CHALLENGED, HOWEVER WHILE TAKING POSITION (APPROX 90 DEG TO LINE UP) TWR QUESTIONED US AS TO OUR PRESENCE ON THE ACTIVE RWY. UNDERSTANDING TO HAVE BEEN CLRED INTO POSITION, THE TWR CTLR INFORMED US THAT THE CLRNC WAS FOR COMMUTER X AB. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI CLEAR OF THE ACTIVE WHILE COMMUTER X AB WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. (THEY HAD BEEN HOLDING SHORT OF A TXWY FURTHER DOWN THE RWY.) THEY DEPARTED, WE TAXIED BACK TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE, AND COMMUTER X AB LANDED. WE WERE THEN RECLRED INTO POSITION. BOTH TWR CTLR AND CREW MEMBERS ACKNOWLEDGE A MISCOM DUE TO SIMILAR CALL SIGNS, HOWEVER WE MAINTAIN THAT IT WAS OUR ACFT WHICH WAS CLRED INTO POSITION.
