Narrative:
During taxi-out, we were notified that we were overweight for takeoff. Not knowing the exact weight we decided to stop the aircraft until we had a good accurate gross weight. Our company asked us to taxi back to the gate (so they could remove some freight). We finally received our actual weight and we were over maximum taxi weight. We continued to hold at the runway while our ground baggage and load people removed the freight. After completion of this freight removal, we completed our aircraft checks and departed with no further problems. At our company, we assume all weights are complied with when we start taxi. There was obviously a mix-up on this departure. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states that he requested the actual weight of aircraft before returning to gate area and when he received the information he discovered that the actual weight exceeded the structural taxi gross weight. He then requested servicing take place in the runway run-up area, and after some delay the excess weight was removed and a maintenance inspection was conducted.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG OVERWEIGHT TAXI.
Narrative: DURING TAXI-OUT, WE WERE NOTIFIED THAT WE WERE OVERWEIGHT FOR TKOF. NOT KNOWING THE EXACT WT WE DECIDED TO STOP THE ACFT UNTIL WE HAD A GOOD ACCURATE GROSS WT. OUR COMPANY ASKED US TO TAXI BACK TO THE GATE (SO THEY COULD REMOVE SOME FREIGHT). WE FINALLY RECEIVED OUR ACTUAL WT AND WE WERE OVER MAX TAXI WT. WE CONTINUED TO HOLD AT THE RWY WHILE OUR GND BAGGAGE AND LOAD PEOPLE REMOVED THE FREIGHT. AFTER COMPLETION OF THIS FREIGHT REMOVAL, WE COMPLETED OUR ACFT CHKS AND DEPARTED WITH NO FURTHER PROBS. AT OUR COMPANY, WE ASSUME ALL WTS ARE COMPLIED WITH WHEN WE START TAXI. THERE WAS OBVIOUSLY A MIX-UP ON THIS DEP. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATES THAT HE REQUESTED THE ACTUAL WT OF ACFT BEFORE RETURNING TO GATE AREA AND WHEN HE RECEIVED THE INFO HE DISCOVERED THAT THE ACTUAL WT EXCEEDED THE STRUCTURAL TAXI GROSS WT. HE THEN REQUESTED SERVICING TAKE PLACE IN THE RWY RUN-UP AREA, AND AFTER SOME DELAY THE EXCESS WT WAS REMOVED AND A MAINT INSPECTION WAS CONDUCTED.
