Narrative:
Had just completed a normal touch and go from runway 22 at esn, had climbed straight ahead through tpa (1100) MSL. Was well beyond airport boundaries, began a gradual right climbing turn to 300 degree. Was not yet on new course when I glanced right rear to see a low wing, single-engine aircraft bank sharp right and go below me. My altitude approximately 1500'. The threat aircraft completed a 180 degree turn and proceeded back toward esn airport. I continued my climb to 3000' and continued on my 300 degree course. Other aircraft known to be in area: low wing single-engine small aircraft departed runway 22 ahead of my touch-and-go and had made a left turnout while I was still climbing straight out. As I turned base to final for touch-and-go, another aircraft had announced an instrument approach procedure on final 2 1/2 mi out. As standard procedure I had announced my actions on CTAF (122.8) crosswind, downwind, base, and final (touch-and-go). Have no idea that the instrument approach aircraft was the threat aircraft, although the near midair aircraft contained 2 persons. Had no previous sighting of the IFR training aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX TWO GA SMA ACFT IN TRAFFIC PATTERN AT NON TWR ARPT.
Narrative: HAD JUST COMPLETED A NORMAL TOUCH AND GO FROM RWY 22 AT ESN, HAD CLIMBED STRAIGHT AHEAD THROUGH TPA (1100) MSL. WAS WELL BEYOND ARPT BOUNDARIES, BEGAN A GRADUAL RIGHT CLIMBING TURN TO 300 DEG. WAS NOT YET ON NEW COURSE WHEN I GLANCED RIGHT REAR TO SEE A LOW WING, SINGLE-ENGINE ACFT BANK SHARP RIGHT AND GO BELOW ME. MY ALT APPROX 1500'. THE THREAT ACFT COMPLETED A 180 DEG TURN AND PROCEEDED BACK TOWARD ESN ARPT. I CONTINUED MY CLIMB TO 3000' AND CONTINUED ON MY 300 DEG COURSE. OTHER ACFT KNOWN TO BE IN AREA: LOW WING SINGLE-ENGINE SMA DEPARTED RWY 22 AHEAD OF MY TOUCH-AND-GO AND HAD MADE A LEFT TURNOUT WHILE I WAS STILL CLIMBING STRAIGHT OUT. AS I TURNED BASE TO FINAL FOR TOUCH-AND-GO, ANOTHER ACFT HAD ANNOUNCED AN INSTRUMENT APCH PROC ON FINAL 2 1/2 MI OUT. AS STANDARD PROC I HAD ANNOUNCED MY ACTIONS ON CTAF (122.8) XWIND, DOWNWIND, BASE, AND FINAL (TOUCH-AND-GO). HAVE NO IDEA THAT THE INSTRUMENT APCH ACFT WAS THE THREAT ACFT, ALTHOUGH THE NEAR MIDAIR ACFT CONTAINED 2 PERSONS. HAD NO PREVIOUS SIGHTING OF THE IFR TRAINING ACFT.
