Narrative:

Departed 35L at den. Cleared to turn left to 170 degree and climb to FL200 with eastbound traffic at 13,500'. The traffic was given as being at 10 O'clock. Copilot reported 'traffic in sight' -- 'no problem'. Traffic was again given as 10 O'clock (toward sun) as I continued climbing turn through 210 degree. Asked copilot if he still had the traffic. He said 'yes, he's way out there'. Still unable to see anything in direction indicated. I continued scanning all directions and picked up a straight-tailed small aircraft at 12 O'clock, less than 1/2 mi. I washed out the turn to pass behind and felt a slight bump as we passed through his wake in the smooth air. No problem but departure probably could have been more accurate in calling the traffic. A distance would have distinguished it from the more distant target that my copilot picked up. Moral: keep scanning in TCA's.

Title: CLOSE PROX CPR ACFT GA-SMA TRAFFIC ADVISORY GIVEN BUT FO SPOTTED WRONG TRAFFIC.

Narrative: DEPARTED 35L AT DEN. CLRED TO TURN LEFT TO 170 DEG AND CLIMB TO FL200 WITH EBND TFC AT 13,500'. THE TFC WAS GIVEN AS BEING AT 10 O'CLOCK. COPLT REPORTED 'TFC IN SIGHT' -- 'NO PROBLEM'. TFC WAS AGAIN GIVEN AS 10 O'CLOCK (TOWARD SUN) AS I CONTINUED CLIMBING TURN THROUGH 210 DEG. ASKED COPLT IF HE STILL HAD THE TFC. HE SAID 'YES, HE'S WAY OUT THERE'. STILL UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING IN DIRECTION INDICATED. I CONTINUED SCANNING ALL DIRECTIONS AND PICKED UP A STRAIGHT-TAILED SMA AT 12 O'CLOCK, LESS THAN 1/2 MI. I WASHED OUT THE TURN TO PASS BEHIND AND FELT A SLIGHT BUMP AS WE PASSED THROUGH HIS WAKE IN THE SMOOTH AIR. NO PROBLEM BUT DEP PROBABLY COULD HAVE BEEN MORE ACCURATE IN CALLING THE TFC. A DISTANCE WOULD HAVE DISTINGUISHED IT FROM THE MORE DISTANT TARGET THAT MY COPLT PICKED UP. MORAL: KEEP SCANNING IN TCA'S.
