Narrative:
I was parked at the GA parking area at det and was preparing to fly to grr. I picked up my clearance and informed ground control that I was ready to taxi. Ground controller told me too taxi to runway 33. Prior to taxi I performed a final pretaxi checklist that included selecting departure control into 1 of 2 radios. In the other radio ground controller was still selected. I started my taxi, completed all checklists and upon nearing the end of runway 33 changed from ground control to tower, announced I was ready to takeoff and received no reply. At this time I looked to the south and saw an aircraft on what I would estimate to be a 2-MI final to runway 33. I still heard nothing on the radio, yet I knew I would be told to hold short due to the incoming aircraft. Being accustomed to hearing radio conversation but not hearing any now, I reached to the radio where I had tuned in the tower and jiggled the knobs. After doing so I found the frequency very busy. Controllers were attempting to contact me and others were contacting ground personnel to direct me clear of the area in which I had stopped. The aircraft on final was now on a go around. I was then directed to return to butler and call the tower. I did, spoke with the supervisor, gave him my name and address but neglected to get his. I must say he was very polite to me. What had happened was I unknowingly taxied beyond the hold line and caused the medium large transport to go around. My position on the airport when I stopped was approximately 1/2 way between the hold line and the east edge of displaced threshold of runway 33. Although I realized I was in error, I would like to mention several things in my defense. The taxi area leading to runway 33 has many yellow lines, some of which define the area south of runway 27 that one must remain clear of, there are more such lines depicting an area that I believe warn of an area, of rough pavement, that one must remain north of. Nearing the entrance of runway 33 these lines are connected to one another by the hold line and beyond all of this are the yellow chevrons depicting the displaced threshold. I am now very familiar with this area, but at the time of this occurrence I was not and did not find it difficult to taxi beyond the hold line.

Title: SMT PLT CROSSES OVER HOLD LINE AT ACTIVE RWY AND CREATES A GO AROUND FOR LNDG ACFT. CITES TXWY MARKINGS AS CONFUSING AND ALSO CITES RADIO PROBLEMS.
Narrative: I WAS PARKED AT THE GA PARKING AREA AT DET AND WAS PREPARING TO FLY TO GRR. I PICKED UP MY CLRNC AND INFORMED GND CTL THAT I WAS READY TO TAXI. GND CTLR TOLD ME TOO TAXI TO RWY 33. PRIOR TO TAXI I PERFORMED A FINAL PRETAXI CHKLIST THAT INCLUDED SELECTING DEP CTL INTO 1 OF 2 RADIOS. IN THE OTHER RADIO GND CTLR WAS STILL SELECTED. I STARTED MY TAXI, COMPLETED ALL CHKLISTS AND UPON NEARING THE END OF RWY 33 CHANGED FROM GND CTL TO TWR, ANNOUNCED I WAS READY TO TKOF AND RECEIVED NO REPLY. AT THIS TIME I LOOKED TO THE S AND SAW AN ACFT ON WHAT I WOULD ESTIMATE TO BE A 2-MI FINAL TO RWY 33. I STILL HEARD NOTHING ON THE RADIO, YET I KNEW I WOULD BE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT DUE TO THE INCOMING ACFT. BEING ACCUSTOMED TO HEARING RADIO CONVERSATION BUT NOT HEARING ANY NOW, I REACHED TO THE RADIO WHERE I HAD TUNED IN THE TWR AND JIGGLED THE KNOBS. AFTER DOING SO I FOUND THE FREQ VERY BUSY. CTLRS WERE ATTEMPTING TO CONTACT ME AND OTHERS WERE CONTACTING GND PERSONNEL TO DIRECT ME CLR OF THE AREA IN WHICH I HAD STOPPED. THE ACFT ON FINAL WAS NOW ON A GAR. I WAS THEN DIRECTED TO RETURN TO BUTLER AND CALL THE TWR. I DID, SPOKE WITH THE SUPVR, GAVE HIM MY NAME AND ADDRESS BUT NEGLECTED TO GET HIS. I MUST SAY HE WAS VERY POLITE TO ME. WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS I UNKNOWINGLY TAXIED BEYOND THE HOLD LINE AND CAUSED THE MLG TO GO AROUND. MY POS ON THE ARPT WHEN I STOPPED WAS APPROX 1/2 WAY BTWN THE HOLD LINE AND THE E EDGE OF DISPLACED THRESHOLD OF RWY 33. ALTHOUGH I REALIZED I WAS IN ERROR, I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION SEVERAL THINGS IN MY DEFENSE. THE TAXI AREA LEADING TO RWY 33 HAS MANY YELLOW LINES, SOME OF WHICH DEFINE THE AREA S OF RWY 27 THAT ONE MUST REMAIN CLEAR OF, THERE ARE MORE SUCH LINES DEPICTING AN AREA THAT I BELIEVE WARN OF AN AREA, OF ROUGH PAVEMENT, THAT ONE MUST REMAIN N OF. NEARING THE ENTRANCE OF RWY 33 THESE LINES ARE CONNECTED TO ONE ANOTHER BY THE HOLD LINE AND BEYOND ALL OF THIS ARE THE YELLOW CHEVRONS DEPICTING THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD. I AM NOW VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS AREA, BUT AT THE TIME OF THIS OCCURRENCE I WAS NOT AND DID NOT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO TAXI BEYOND THE HOLD LINE.
