Narrative:

On climb out upon reaching about 4000 MSL or 3500 AGL and about 5 miles north east of the departure airport there was engine roughness with vibration and unusual sounds. At this point I took the flight controls from the student and contacted approach with a request for a precautionary landing. Upon contacting tower there was severe engine vibration and I shut down the engine in order to prevent further damage. Upon landing the aircraft we exited the runway and the aircraft was towed to a local FBO.
