Narrative:
Ellington tower instructed me to, 'make a left turn and keep it tight,' after clearing a departure from 35L. After giving me a change to departure, houston asked me what my altitude and heading was. I responded that tower had given me a left turn and no altitude. Houston responded that I was encroaching on an arrival at hobby that was currently out of 2000'. I was told to make an immediate right to 090 degrees. If I had been assigned a heading and altitude, this apparently would not have occurred. I assumed that since I had requested stage ii from efd to iws that houston was aware of my departure instructions. Usually the tower relays instructions from approach to the departing aircraft. In retrospect, the departure instructions from tower seemed non-standard and incomplete. In the future, I will be sure to have a clear heading and altitude the next time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX GA SMT UNK ACFT. SMT ON VFR DEP FROM EFD AND UNK ON IFR APCH INTO HUB.
Narrative: ELLINGTON TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO, 'MAKE A LEFT TURN AND KEEP IT TIGHT,' AFTER CLRING A DEP FROM 35L. AFTER GIVING ME A CHANGE TO DEP, HOUSTON ASKED ME WHAT MY ALT AND HDG WAS. I RESPONDED THAT TWR HAD GIVEN ME A LEFT TURN AND NO ALT. HOUSTON RESPONDED THAT I WAS ENCROACHING ON AN ARR AT HOBBY THAT WAS CURRENTLY OUT OF 2000'. I WAS TOLD TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE RIGHT TO 090 DEGS. IF I HAD BEEN ASSIGNED A HDG AND ALT, THIS APPARENTLY WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED. I ASSUMED THAT SINCE I HAD REQUESTED STAGE II FROM EFD TO IWS THAT HOUSTON WAS AWARE OF MY DEP INSTRUCTIONS. USUALLY THE TWR RELAYS INSTRUCTIONS FROM APCH TO THE DEPARTING ACFT. IN RETROSPECT, THE DEP INSTRUCTIONS FROM TWR SEEMED NON-STANDARD AND INCOMPLETE. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL BE SURE TO HAVE A CLEAR HDG AND ALT THE NEXT TIME.
