Narrative:
As we were climbing out of msy, departure said there was traffic at 12 O'clock. At the same time TCASII called TA and soon thereafter an RA. Climbing at approximately 2500 FPM we got a visual on the light aircraft on our nose in level flight and 1-2 mi distance. The airplane appeared to be slightly to our right so I turned slightly left. At about same time the other airplane turned to his right and passed approximately 600 ft below. I feel that departure control could have given us an earlier warning about the traffic. TCASII worked fine and gave a good resolution. One little problem. TCASII and departure control were talking at same time.
