Narrative:
I was southbound from gainsville to lakeland for a full stop. Being unfamiliar with the airport, I overflew the left downwind for runway 9. I reported to tower that I was unable to carry through with their request and I was flying over the field at 1300' MSL. Lakeland tower instructed me to enter a right base. As the controller stated no runway, I assumed a right base for runway 9. As I entered base, I flew over the approach end of runway 5 and encountered a near hit with an small aircraft Y. I was flying an small aircraft X. Diagram of airport below.

Narrative: I WAS SBND FROM GAINSVILLE TO LAKELAND FOR A FULL STOP. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT, I OVERFLEW THE LEFT DOWNWIND FOR RWY 9. I RPTED TO TWR THAT I WAS UNABLE TO CARRY THROUGH WITH THEIR REQUEST AND I WAS FLYING OVER THE FIELD AT 1300' MSL. LAKELAND TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO ENTER A RIGHT BASE. AS THE CTLR STATED NO RWY, I ASSUMED A RIGHT BASE FOR RWY 9. AS I ENTERED BASE, I FLEW OVER THE APCH END OF RWY 5 AND ENCOUNTERED A NEAR HIT WITH AN SMA Y. I WAS FLYING AN SMA X. DIAGRAM OF ARPT BELOW.
