Narrative:
We were on a training flight (IFR) in VFR conditions. We misunderstood instructions from tower and improperly entered the pattern at la verne making right traffic to runway 8L instead of left traffic to runway 26L. We discovered the error when we saw the numbers. Tower instructed us then to reenter downwind. I feel I relied too much on the student since we are both instrs. I only passively listened to towers instructions. In the future I will pay special attention to even experienced students. Supplemental information from acn 146985. We were training flight for a cfii certificate. Misunderstood instructions from tower for us to enter traffic for runway 26L and we ended up making traffic for runway 8L. I feel I relied too much on the instrument since we were both instrs. I was also quite rusty at instruments and only passively listened to towers instructions. In the future I will pay special attention to ATC instructions even with an instrument on board.
