Narrative:

On approach into ord copilot and myself (captain) were issued a clearance to descend from 8000' to 4000'. Copilot read back clearance. (No reply from ATC) at 5400' the controller asked our altitude. I replied 5400' for 4000'. Controller said we were assigned 7000'. I told him we read back 4000'. He then issued us a clearance to continue to 3000'. Nothing further was said. After landing I called the controllers to see what they were doing about the occurrence. They said that there was no one else around us and they were not writing up anything on it.
