Narrative:
Cleared to 7000' with expedited descent through 9000'. Bases of clouds around 5000' scattered. We were running checklists when approach asked our altitude (altitude was approximately 6400'). Before we could respond, approach called back and said 'maintain 6000.' first officer was flying and had decided to fly by hand through 10000'. We did not hear the altitude warning which is not surprising since our maintenance department has reduced the vol of these systems to almost a subaudible level. This maintenance problem should be corrected as our entire flight has this anomaly. Supplemental information from acn 155446: I returned to line flying after a 27 day vacation. This incident could have been avoided if the checklist had been run earlier.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: COMMUTER LTT ALT DEVIATION OVERSHOT DURING DESCENT. CAPT CLAIMS ALT ALERT AUDIO LEVEL SET TOO LOW BY COMPANY MAINTENANCE.
Narrative: CLRED TO 7000' WITH EXPEDITED DSNT THROUGH 9000'. BASES OF CLOUDS AROUND 5000' SCATTERED. WE WERE RUNNING CHKLISTS WHEN APCH ASKED OUR ALT (ALT WAS APPROX 6400'). BEFORE WE COULD RESPOND, APCH CALLED BACK AND SAID 'MAINTAIN 6000.' F/O WAS FLYING AND HAD DECIDED TO FLY BY HAND THROUGH 10000'. WE DID NOT HEAR THE ALT WARNING WHICH IS NOT SURPRISING SINCE OUR MAINT DEPT HAS REDUCED THE VOL OF THESE SYSTEMS TO ALMOST A SUBAUDIBLE LEVEL. THIS MAINT PROB SHOULD BE CORRECTED AS OUR ENTIRE FLT HAS THIS ANOMALY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 155446: I RETURNED TO LINE FLYING AFTER A 27 DAY VACATION. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE CHKLIST HAD BEEN RUN EARLIER.
