Narrative:

My student and I were doing x-wind landing procedures at north las vegas air terminal (vgt) nv. Wind was about 120 degree at 20 KTS landing runway 7. While on our third trip around the pattern I heard ATC tell an aircraft to report downwind at 3500' (500' above tpa). Shortly afterwards, while downwind abeam the tower at 3000' MSL and even with the 'numbers' we observed an small aircraft enter left base directly in front of us, same altitude, and approximately 200' ahead. When we observed him first he was about our 1 O'clock position coming to our 12 O'clock. No time to do anything. I asked the controller to 'mark the tape' and asked where did that small aircraft come from. He advised me of other traffic and I told him we had contact with it (visibility). I later called the tower and was told that the small aircraft was the aircraft told to enter downwind but instead entered base leg. Also was told they were switching controllers at that time. We were no advised of that aircraft entering the pattern. Both the controllers and ourselves should have been looking better outside (heads up). Also, I talked to the other pilot and he assumed he was in radar contact, because he was handed off to ugt from las and he was unfamiliar with the airport layout and was coming to las vegas from another state. We all need to scan outside more, we concluded.

Title: INSTRUCTOR WITH STUDENT HAS NMAC WITH ACFT MAKING WRONG TRAFIC PATTERN ENTRY.

Narrative: MY STUDENT AND I WERE DOING X-WIND LNDG PROCS AT N LAS VEGAS AIR TERMINAL (VGT) NV. WIND WAS ABOUT 120 DEG AT 20 KTS LNDG RWY 7. WHILE ON OUR THIRD TRIP AROUND THE PATTERN I HEARD ATC TELL AN ACFT TO RPT DOWNWIND AT 3500' (500' ABOVE TPA). SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, WHILE DOWNWIND ABEAM THE TWR AT 3000' MSL AND EVEN WITH THE 'NUMBERS' WE OBSERVED AN SMA ENTER L BASE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US, SAME ALT, AND APPROX 200' AHEAD. WHEN WE OBSERVED HIM FIRST HE WAS ABOUT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS COMING TO OUR 12 O'CLOCK. NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING. I ASKED THE CTLR TO 'MARK THE TAPE' AND ASKED WHERE DID THAT SMA COME FROM. HE ADVISED ME OF OTHER TFC AND I TOLD HIM WE HAD CONTACT WITH IT (VIS). I LATER CALLED THE TWR AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SMA WAS THE ACFT TOLD TO ENTER DOWNWIND BUT INSTEAD ENTERED BASE LEG. ALSO WAS TOLD THEY WERE SWITCHING CTLRS AT THAT TIME. WE WERE NO ADVISED OF THAT ACFT ENTERING THE PATTERN. BOTH THE CTLRS AND OURSELVES SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOOKING BETTER OUTSIDE (HEADS UP). ALSO, I TALKED TO THE OTHER PLT AND HE ASSUMED HE WAS IN RADAR CONTACT, BECAUSE HE WAS HANDED OFF TO UGT FROM LAS AND HE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT LAYOUT AND WAS COMING TO LAS VEGAS FROM ANOTHER STATE. WE ALL NEED TO SCAN OUTSIDE MORE, WE CONCLUDED.
