Narrative:
Copilot and I have similar levels of experience, though I am chief pilot. At first I had insisted on standardized cockpit procedure to insure everything gets done. Over the 2 plus yrs we've flown together, we've grown accustomed to filling roles as they pertain to various tasks in cockpit. PNF routinely sets altitude preselect to altitude climbing or descending too. Recently, however, we've been haphazardly doing things from either seat west/O verbal confirmation of the completion of the task. PNF was looking at charts for routing and did not set 9000' in preselect. We had previously been cleared to 13000' by center and because PNF saw me do this and assumed I was no 'in charge' of that task. When we were told to stop climb at 9000', PNF didn't set it nor did I. I caught it (remembered that is) climbing out of 9600' and started descent immediately. Looking at altitude preselect it still said 13000'. PNF 'apologized' and set 9000'. Center called and informed we were cleared to 9000'. I guess it's time to dust off the checklists, review cockpit procedure/responsibilities and stick to them this time.

Title: FLT CREW NEGLECTS TO RESET ALT PRESELECT WHEN CLIMB ALT AMENDED.
Narrative: COPLT AND I HAVE SIMILAR LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE, THOUGH I AM CHIEF PLT. AT FIRST I HAD INSISTED ON STANDARDIZED COCKPIT PROC TO INSURE EVERYTHING GETS DONE. OVER THE 2 PLUS YRS WE'VE FLOWN TOGETHER, WE'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO FILLING ROLES AS THEY PERTAIN TO VARIOUS TASKS IN COCKPIT. PNF ROUTINELY SETS ALT PRESELECT TO ALT CLBING OR DSNDING TOO. RECENTLY, HOWEVER, WE'VE BEEN HAPHAZARDLY DOING THINGS FROM EITHER SEAT W/O VERBAL CONFIRMATION OF THE COMPLETION OF THE TASK. PNF WAS LOOKING AT CHARTS FOR RTING AND DID NOT SET 9000' IN PRESELECT. WE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN CLRED TO 13000' BY CTR AND BECAUSE PNF SAW ME DO THIS AND ASSUMED I WAS NO 'IN CHARGE' OF THAT TASK. WHEN WE WERE TOLD TO STOP CLB AT 9000', PNF DIDN'T SET IT NOR DID I. I CAUGHT IT (REMEMBERED THAT IS) CLBING OUT OF 9600' AND STARTED DSNT IMMEDIATELY. LOOKING AT ALT PRESELECT IT STILL SAID 13000'. PNF 'APOLOGIZED' AND SET 9000'. CTR CALLED AND INFORMED WE WERE CLRED TO 9000'. I GUESS IT'S TIME TO DUST OFF THE CHKLISTS, REVIEW COCKPIT PROC/RESPONSIBILITIES AND STICK TO THEM THIS TIME.
