Narrative:
Taxi clearance from ground control (evidently) was to taxi left on 'T' to runway 28L. We started to taxi turn left and ground control had us stop for other traffic which had us looking straight towards 'P' taxiway. I then had an aural warning chime in the cockpit (latest technology type aircraft) warning comes through pilots headset plus visually displayed. While clearing the warning a new taxi clearance was received. The content of which, as I remember, was to go behind a commuter aircraft and proceed 'straight ahead' which I did. That action resulted in my crossing runway 32 at 'P'. Another medium large transport had xed runway 32 via 'P' ahead of me and I followed him. After crossing runway 32, ground control informed me that my taxi was not consistent with their intended route of taxi for my aircraft. After which I followed their taxi instructions for runway 28L. Ground control of aircraft at best is difficult at times. The ground controllers at pit routinely do an outstanding job. On reflection the situation resulted from stopping as directed for the aircraft in front of me, seeing another aircraft cross runway 32 at 'P', then proceeding 'straight ahead' on 'P' which was not the controllers intent. I have taken a thorough review of my entire flight operation with particular emphasis on the ground operation. Future ground operations will ensure compliance with ground controllers instructions and intent. If doubt exists on my part there will be in hesitation to confirm the intended route of taxi so as to conduct that part of the operation in a safe and professional manner.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG TOOK WRONG TAXI ROUTE AND CROSSED A RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: TAXI CLRNC FROM GND CTL (EVIDENTLY) WAS TO TAXI L ON 'T' TO RWY 28L. WE STARTED TO TAXI TURN L AND GND CTL HAD US STOP FOR OTHER TFC WHICH HAD US LOOKING STRAIGHT TOWARDS 'P' TXWY. I THEN HAD AN AURAL WARNING CHIME IN THE COCKPIT (LATEST TECHNOLOGY TYPE ACFT) WARNING COMES THROUGH PLTS HEADSET PLUS VISUALLY DISPLAYED. WHILE CLRING THE WARNING A NEW TAXI CLRNC WAS RECEIVED. THE CONTENT OF WHICH, AS I REMEMBER, WAS TO GO BEHIND A COMMUTER ACFT AND PROCEED 'STRAIGHT AHEAD' WHICH I DID. THAT ACTION RESULTED IN MY XING RWY 32 AT 'P'. ANOTHER MLG HAD XED RWY 32 VIA 'P' AHEAD OF ME AND I FOLLOWED HIM. AFTER XING RWY 32, GND CTL INFORMED ME THAT MY TAXI WAS NOT CONSISTENT WITH THEIR INTENDED RTE OF TAXI FOR MY ACFT. AFTER WHICH I FOLLOWED THEIR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 28L. GND CTL OF ACFT AT BEST IS DIFFICULT AT TIMES. THE GND CTLRS AT PIT ROUTINELY DO AN OUTSTANDING JOB. ON REFLECTION THE SITUATION RESULTED FROM STOPPING AS DIRECTED FOR THE ACFT IN FRONT OF ME, SEEING ANOTHER ACFT CROSS RWY 32 AT 'P', THEN PROCEEDING 'STRAIGHT AHEAD' ON 'P' WHICH WAS NOT THE CTLRS INTENT. I HAVE TAKEN A THOROUGH REVIEW OF MY ENTIRE FLT OPERATION WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE GND OPERATION. FUTURE GND OPS WILL ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH GND CTLRS INSTRUCTIONS AND INTENT. IF DOUBT EXISTS ON MY PART THERE WILL BE IN HESITATION TO CONFIRM THE INTENDED RTE OF TAXI SO AS TO CONDUCT THAT PART OF THE OPERATION IN A SAFE AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER.
