Narrative:
This was my first morning flying a traffic reporter through the northern nj/metropolitan ny area. The route was explained to me by the previous pilot was route I80 west then east into teb, then I95 south to route 3 west to garden state pkwy south through ewr TCA. Just after takeoff from caldwell the reporter told me to take route I80 east to the pkwy south. However, he pointed to route I280 southeast. There was patchy fog that morning and the wind from the northwest was about 20-25 KTS. When I approached the air traffic area of teb and requested and received my clearance, I thought I was 13 mi northwest of ewr (along the garden state pkwy). Due to the winds I realized I was much closer and moving southbound rapidly. I cleared teb air traffic area and requested a clearance for ewr TCA. I was given a squawk. I had reported 6.5 NM northwest of ewr, but was idented from northwest of ewr and told to exit to the west and in the future make my request for transition clearance sooner. I thought my reporter would have notified me of my error in which road (highway) to follow eastbound, as he had been flying this route for many months 2 shifts/day. We did not communicate well on that first flight, and my relative inexperience with this area of the TCA contributed to the problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MEDIA TRAFFIC WATCH ACFT ENTERS TCA WITH CLRNC.
Narrative: THIS WAS MY FIRST MORNING FLYING A TFC RPTR THROUGH THE NORTHERN NJ/METRO NY AREA. THE RTE WAS EXPLAINED TO ME BY THE PREVIOUS PLT WAS RTE I80 W THEN E INTO TEB, THEN I95 S TO RTE 3 W TO GARDEN STATE PKWY S THROUGH EWR TCA. JUST AFTER TKOF FROM CALDWELL THE RPTR TOLD ME TO TAKE RTE I80 E TO THE PKWY S. HOWEVER, HE POINTED TO RTE I280 SE. THERE WAS PATCHY FOG THAT MORNING AND THE WIND FROM THE NW WAS ABOUT 20-25 KTS. WHEN I APCHED THE ATA OF TEB AND REQUESTED AND RECEIVED MY CLRNC, I THOUGHT I WAS 13 MI NW OF EWR (ALONG THE GARDEN STATE PKWY). DUE TO THE WINDS I REALIZED I WAS MUCH CLOSER AND MOVING SBND RAPIDLY. I CLRED TEB ATA AND REQUESTED A CLRNC FOR EWR TCA. I WAS GIVEN A SQUAWK. I HAD RPTED 6.5 NM NW OF EWR, BUT WAS IDENTED FROM NW OF EWR AND TOLD TO EXIT TO THE W AND IN THE FUTURE MAKE MY REQUEST FOR TRANSITION CLRNC SOONER. I THOUGHT MY RPTR WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ME OF MY ERROR IN WHICH ROAD (HWY) TO FOLLOW EBND, AS HE HAD BEEN FLYING THIS RTE FOR MANY MONTHS 2 SHIFTS/DAY. WE DID NOT COMMUNICATE WELL ON THAT FIRST FLT, AND MY RELATIVE INEXPERIENCE WITH THIS AREA OF THE TCA CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROB.
