Narrative:
Heading west after departing dtw 20 NM west 5000' MSL, level flight, sighted aircraft at 4 O'clock position approximately 3 NM heading at us. Aircraft appeared lower and would pass beneath us. Aircraft passed directly below approximately 200-300' lower. It was an small transport. When they saw us they took evasive action, (steep right turn) however, the aircraft passed below us during the turn, then proceeded northwest of our position. The air carrier pilots reported a near miss. No traffic alert from dtw departure.
