Narrative:

While taxiing to the gate after a normal landing we xed an intersection with another runway before contacting ground controller for clearance. A small aircraft had landed on that runway, however, there was no danger of him crossing the taxiway we were on. We questioned each other before crossing the intersecting runway about clearance, and I thought that we had been cleared to the ramp. I found that I had not switched to ground control, which I did right away and they cleared us to the ramp. We did, however, get part of the way across that intersecting runway. Contributing factors were cockpit duties after landing, flaps, switches, trim, checklist. I missed the one important item of switching to ground control for clearance. The factors would include some unnecessary conversation, thinking that we had been cleared to the ramp which includes being cleared to cross all intersecting runways. This was the second leg of five that day with a short layover (10 1/4 hours) ahead of us and early departures. We were still on tower frequency so if ground control told us to hold short I never answered and they didn't question us (on tower frequency). I gained some valuable experience with this incident and will remember this. Supplemental information from acn 182426. The crew needs to contact ground control before reading the after landing checklist. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Callback conducted as part of structured callback effort on runway incursions. Reporter said that he assumed he had been cleared to the ramp because it is often the case that the local controller clears them to the ramp on the tower frequency immediately after landing. Reporter suggested that this is a non-standard practice that should be stopped.

Title: FLT CREW DISTR SOCIALIZING CAUSED FO TO FORGET TO CONTACT GND CTLR AFTER LNDG. HIS LGT TAXIED ACROSS ACFT RWY ENROUTE TO RAMP WHILE ANOTHER ACFT WAS FORCED TO ABORT HIS TKOF.

Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO THE GATE AFTER A NORMAL LNDG WE XED AN INTXN WITH ANOTHER RWY BEFORE CONTACTING GND CTLR FOR CLRNC. A SMALL ACFT HAD LANDED ON THAT RWY, HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO DANGER OF HIM XING THE TXWY WE WERE ON. WE QUESTIONED EACH OTHER BEFORE XING THE INTERSECTING RWY ABOUT CLRNC, AND I THOUGHT THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE RAMP. I FOUND THAT I HAD NOT SWITCHED TO GND CTL, WHICH I DID R AWAY AND THEY CLRED US TO THE RAMP. WE DID, HOWEVER, GET PART OF THE WAY ACROSS THAT INTERSECTING RWY. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE COCKPIT DUTIES AFTER LNDG, FLAPS, SWITCHES, TRIM, CHKLIST. I MISSED THE ONE IMPORTANT ITEM OF SWITCHING TO GND CTL FOR CLRNC. THE FACTORS WOULD INCLUDE SOME UNNECESSARY CONVERSATION, THINKING THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE RAMP WHICH INCLUDES BEING CLRED TO CROSS ALL INTERSECTING RWYS. THIS WAS THE SEC LEG OF FIVE THAT DAY WITH A SHORT LAYOVER (10 1/4 HRS) AHEAD OF US AND EARLY DEPS. WE WERE STILL ON TWR FREQ SO IF GND CTL TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT I NEVER ANSWERED AND THEY DIDN'T QUESTION US (ON TWR FREQ). I GAINED SOME VALUABLE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS INCIDENT AND WILL REMEMBER THIS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 182426. THE CREW NEEDS TO CONTACT GND CTL BEFORE READING THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. CALLBACK CONDUCTED AS PART OF STRUCTURED CALLBACK EFFORT ON RWY INCURSIONS. RPTR SAID THAT HE ASSUMED HE HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE RAMP BECAUSE IT IS OFTEN THE CASE THAT THE LCL CTLR CLRS THEM TO THE RAMP ON THE TWR FREQ IMMEDIATELY AFTER LNDG. RPTR SUGGESTED THAT THIS IS A NON-STANDARD PRACTICE THAT SHOULD BE STOPPED.
