Narrative:

I went out to the airport for a short pleasure flight with a friend. We took off and flew around the local area for about 30 min. I came in over midfield and made a normal touch and go. There was a small plane ahead of me. He was slow and making a wide pattern. So wide I could have turned inside his base leg and landed before him. I made a very wide and long downwind and base. The concentration on the other plane took my mind off of mine. When I turned final, the plane had landed and was still rolling down the runway. I called final and they were still on the runway. I was at the point where I was going to go around or land, just as I started to put the power in and go around, he got off the runway. I committed to landing by putting down the flaps, but for some reason I did not do a 'gump' check. I always do a 'gump' check on short final, but his time I did not. By the time we made contact there was not any question what happened and what I needed to do. Without thinking my reaction was to steer the airplane with the rudders to a stop, cut off everything and get out of the airplane. There is one thing I would tell people to do in all phases of flight; takeoff checklist, cruise checklist, landing checklist. There is no substitution.

Title: SMA LANDS GEAR UP.

Narrative: I WENT OUT TO THE ARPT FOR A SHORT PLEASURE FLT WITH A FRIEND. WE TOOK OFF AND FLEW AROUND THE LCL AREA FOR ABOUT 30 MIN. I CAME IN OVER MIDFIELD AND MADE A NORMAL TOUCH AND GO. THERE WAS A SMALL PLANE AHEAD OF ME. HE WAS SLOW AND MAKING A WIDE PATTERN. SO WIDE I COULD HAVE TURNED INSIDE HIS BASE LEG AND LANDED BEFORE HIM. I MADE A VERY WIDE AND LONG DOWNWIND AND BASE. THE CONCENTRATION ON THE OTHER PLANE TOOK MY MIND OFF OF MINE. WHEN I TURNED FINAL, THE PLANE HAD LANDED AND WAS STILL ROLLING DOWN THE RWY. I CALLED FINAL AND THEY WERE STILL ON THE RWY. I WAS AT THE POINT WHERE I WAS GOING TO GAR OR LAND, JUST AS I STARTED TO PUT THE PWR IN AND GAR, HE GOT OFF THE RWY. I COMMITTED TO LNDG BY PUTTING DOWN THE FLAPS, BUT FOR SOME REASON I DID NOT DO A 'GUMP' CHK. I ALWAYS DO A 'GUMP' CHK ON SHORT FINAL, BUT HIS TIME I DID NOT. BY THE TIME WE MADE CONTACT THERE WAS NOT ANY QUESTION WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT I NEEDED TO DO. WITHOUT THINKING MY REACTION WAS TO STEER THE AIRPLANE WITH THE RUDDERS TO A STOP, CUT OFF EVERYTHING AND GET OUT OF THE AIRPLANE. THERE IS ONE THING I WOULD TELL PEOPLE TO DO IN ALL PHASES OF FLT; TKOF CHKLIST, CRUISE CHKLIST, LNDG CHKLIST. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTION.
