Narrative:
Ground control cleared us to the gate. We were on taxiway O heading southeast. The taxiway sign pointed toward O so he turned at the intersection and turned onto runway 4. I was looking at the chart for our ramp frequency. When I looked up I saw we were on runway 4 and immediately informed ground and we taxied off the runway into the ramp. Active runways were 33 and 28. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter clarified landing runway, taxi route. Says he (first officer) had made landing and captain was doing the taxiing. Reporter had head down when runway 4 was entered by mistake. Learned late that captain had followed a solid yellow line painted on surface. The line is intended to lead aircraft off runway 4/22, but PF had followed it in reverse and onto the runway. Reporter does not recall seeing any sign at that point which would warn of runway ahead. Reporter suggests that solid yellow line be painted as a broken line and that sign be installed indicating runway ahead. Reporter gave more information on type aircraft, hours in type, and his ratings. Says that sometimes need more than 1 chart to work proper frequencys going into or out of gates.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTHORIZED RWY ENTRY BY ACR.
Narrative: GND CTL CLRED US TO THE GATE. WE WERE ON TAXIWAY O HDG SE. THE TAXIWAY SIGN POINTED TOWARD O SO HE TURNED AT THE INTXN AND TURNED ONTO RWY 4. I WAS LOOKING AT THE CHART FOR OUR RAMP FREQ. WHEN I LOOKED UP I SAW WE WERE ON RWY 4 AND IMMEDIATELY INFORMED GND AND WE TAXIED OFF THE RWY INTO THE RAMP. ACTIVE RWYS WERE 33 AND 28. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR CLARIFIED LNDG RWY, TAXI RTE. SAYS HE (FO) HAD MADE LNDG AND CAPT WAS DOING THE TAXIING. RPTR HAD HEAD DOWN WHEN RWY 4 WAS ENTERED BY MISTAKE. LEARNED LATE THAT CAPT HAD FOLLOWED A SOLID YELLOW LINE PAINTED ON SURFACE. THE LINE IS INTENDED TO LEAD ACFT OFF RWY 4/22, BUT PF HAD FOLLOWED IT IN REVERSE AND ONTO THE RWY. RPTR DOES NOT RECALL SEEING ANY SIGN AT THAT POINT WHICH WOULD WARN OF RWY AHEAD. RPTR SUGGESTS THAT SOLID YELLOW LINE BE PAINTED AS A BROKEN LINE AND THAT SIGN BE INSTALLED INDICATING RWY AHEAD. RPTR GAVE MORE INFO ON TYPE ACFT, HRS IN TYPE, AND HIS RATINGS. SAYS THAT SOMETIMES NEED MORE THAN 1 CHART TO WORK PROPER FREQS GOING INTO OR OUT OF GATES.
