Narrative:
Climbing out of sea in VMC under radar vectors to avoid a commuter at 15000 ft, we were restr to 14000 ft. Our aircraft was TCASII equipped. First officer was hand flying aircraft. While observing the conflicting traffic visually, we became somewhat fixated on the correlation between conflicting traffic's visual position and the TCASII display, inadvertently climbed to 14700 ft while restr to 14000 ft. Returned to 14000 and was advised by center that no alert had occurred and that no problem existed since conflicting aircraft never came within 5 mi of our position. The basic cause of incident was distraction due to TCASII presentation and visual observation of target aircraft. Contributing factor was the confign of the altitude alerting system on this aircraft. The alert light goes out 500 ft prior to selected altitude and does not alert again (light) until you have deviated by 500 ft, outside ATC's 300 ft threshold.
