Narrative:

After completing mission requirements with some sortie time remaining, I decided to fly up to the rock river prior to returning to home base at pia. The navigation leg was 60 mi in length over level terrain that sometimes has few distinguishing features. While northbound my copilot first noticed a VOR station visually at which time a right turn was commenced as VOR stations were not to be overflown! After going east for 15 mi, I finally saw the rock river. After confirming the river and the ground track, I was about 20 mi off course. Since penetration of moline airspace was not planned, I did not have their frequencys and was not familiar with their airspace restrictions. Next time, I will be more thorough on my mission planning and flight discipline!
