Narrative:
Planned IFR flight from atl to ptk. Picked up clearance. Ground control advised runway 8R in use for takeoff. Asked if familiar with airport, replied negative. Gave taxi instructions via 'dixie' to hold short of 8L. Approaching 8L we cleared across and advised to 'turn right on taxiway bravo to 8R.' proceeded on bravo. Bravo ended (in fact there is a rather sharp turn to right). Stopped aircraft on bravo. Noted sign advising to hold and contact tower (on bravo 2). Called tower, advised 'ready for takeoff, holding bravo 2.' tower advised to 'hold short.' held while 6-7 heavy aircraft departed on 8R from departure end. Tower then cleared another transport for takeoff followed shortly thereafter by instructions to our aircraft to 'taxi into position and hold.' noted 1500 ft from B2 intersection. Then realized tower controller did not know my position on field. Replied 'roger position and hold after traffic now on roll clears.' tower replied 'he should be gone by now.' I replied 'negative, we're holding at bravo 2.' controller issued 'hold short' instructions and began to berate us as he claimed we had not advised of position. I stated that we did on initial call up. Shortly thereafter cleared into position for departure, uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA TWIN MISUNDERSTOOD TAXI CLRNC. STOPPED TOO SOON ON TAXIWAY. DID NOT ADVISE TWR.
Narrative: PLANNED IFR FLT FROM ATL TO PTK. PICKED UP CLRNC. GND CTL ADVISED RWY 8R IN USE FOR TKOF. ASKED IF FAMILIAR WITH ARPT, REPLIED NEGATIVE. GAVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS VIA 'DIXIE' TO HOLD SHORT OF 8L. APCHING 8L WE CLRED ACROSS AND ADVISED TO 'TURN R ON TAXIWAY BRAVO TO 8R.' PROCEEDED ON BRAVO. BRAVO ENDED (IN FACT THERE IS A RATHER SHARP TURN TO R). STOPPED ACFT ON BRAVO. NOTED SIGN ADVISING TO HOLD AND CONTACT TWR (ON BRAVO 2). CALLED TWR, ADVISED 'READY FOR TKOF, HOLDING BRAVO 2.' TWR ADVISED TO 'HOLD SHORT.' HELD WHILE 6-7 HVY ACFT DEPARTED ON 8R FROM DEP END. TWR THEN CLRED ANOTHER TRANSPORT FOR TKOF FOLLOWED SHORTLY THEREAFTER BY INSTRUCTIONS TO OUR ACFT TO 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' NOTED 1500 FT FROM B2 INTXN. THEN REALIZED TWR CTLR DID NOT KNOW MY POS ON FIELD. REPLIED 'ROGER POS AND HOLD AFTER TFC NOW ON ROLL CLRS.' TWR REPLIED 'HE SHOULD BE GONE BY NOW.' I REPLIED 'NEGATIVE, WE'RE HOLDING AT BRAVO 2.' CTLR ISSUED 'HOLD SHORT' INSTRUCTIONS AND BEGAN TO BERATE US AS HE CLAIMED WE HAD NOT ADVISED OF POS. I STATED THAT WE DID ON INITIAL CALL UP. SHORTLY THEREAFTER CLRED INTO POS FOR DEP, UNEVENTFUL.
