Narrative:
Cleared for takeoff runway 17 at cos. Took runway to use total length, required back taxi approximately 300 ft. We were at maximum weight. Turning left on runway for short back-taxi, tower said turn right on runway for departure. (In my mind, 'what other direction would we turn?) light aircraft turning final for runway 12. As we back-taxied tower sent light aircraft around and we began takeoff roll. Tower chastised us for not complying with his instructions to 'turn right on the runway.' I had noticed the light aircraft turning final and judged there to be no conflict. On our takeoff roll tower cleared light aircraft to land. If tower had wanted us to takeoff from the intersection, perhaps he should have cleared us for an 'intersection departure' or depart from the intersection, we should have informed him of our operational needs as well. There was no real conflict. Runways converge but do not intersect. Tower controller and I did not connect on his instructions or expectations.

Title: ACR MLG BACK TRACKED ON RWY FOR FULL LENGTH TKOF CAUSING SMA TO GAR FROM FINAL TO INTERSECTING RWY.
Narrative: CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 17 AT COS. TOOK RWY TO USE TOTAL LENGTH, REQUIRED BACK TAXI APPROX 300 FT. WE WERE AT MAX WT. TURNING L ON RWY FOR SHORT BACK-TAXI, TWR SAID TURN R ON RWY FOR DEP. (IN MY MIND, 'WHAT OTHER DIRECTION WOULD WE TURN?) LIGHT ACFT TURNING FINAL FOR RWY 12. AS WE BACK-TAXIED TWR SENT LIGHT ACFT AROUND AND WE BEGAN TKOF ROLL. TWR CHASTISED US FOR NOT COMPLYING WITH HIS INSTRUCTIONS TO 'TURN R ON THE RWY.' I HAD NOTICED THE LIGHT ACFT TURNING FINAL AND JUDGED THERE TO BE NO CONFLICT. ON OUR TKOF ROLL TWR CLRED LIGHT ACFT TO LAND. IF TWR HAD WANTED US TO TKOF FROM THE INTXN, PERHAPS HE SHOULD HAVE CLRED US FOR AN 'INTXN DEP' OR DEPART FROM THE INTXN, WE SHOULD HAVE INFORMED HIM OF OUR OPERATIONAL NEEDS AS WELL. THERE WAS NO REAL CONFLICT. RWYS CONVERGE BUT DO NOT INTERSECT. TWR CTLR AND I DID NOT CONNECT ON HIS INSTRUCTIONS OR EXPECTATIONS.
