Narrative:
After landing on runway 23 I exited the runway with a right turn onto taxiway B. The ground controller instructed me to taxi straight ahead, turn right and hold short of 28L. I complied. 1 aircraft landed, the ground controller cleared me to cross runway 28L to the ramp. From my vantage point it appeared that to cross runway 28L I would have to cross it on a diagonal to reach the opposite taxiway entrance to the ramp. As I crossed runway 28L the controller called and told me to get off the runway and wanted to know where I was going. I replied that I had been cleared to cross runway 28L. The controller responded that he had wanted me to cross the runway straight ahead, not on a diagonal. After I crossed the runway I requested further taxi instruction clarification to the aviation ramp. Problem arose: from my vantage point before crossing runway 28L I could see that the entrance to the ramp would take me on a diagonal across the runway. I believed at the time that I would be entering the ramp at taxiway C2 from G. I was actually at F2 and entered at C1 which is quite wide and on a diagonal. My hold position was actually F2, the controller wanted me to enter at F1. From F2 on the south side of the runway I was not able to see that it was possible to cross straight ahead to F1. I believe that this is due to the fact that runway 28L has a large crown for water runoff which blocked the view of the opposite entrance. The controller's yelling 'to get off the runway and where are you going' created confusion, upon realizing what the actual intent was, I expedited. Controllers should not yell at pilots, they can be firm but not where safety now becomes compromised because pilots operating at unfamiliar airports become even more confused. I had only been to columbus once before and had never landed on runway 23L. Controller should have said taxi straight ahead cross runway 28L, instead of just cross 28L.

Title: UNAUTHORIZED UNCOORDINATED RWY ENTRY.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 23 I EXITED THE RWY WITH A R TURN ONTO TAXIWAY B. THE GND CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI STRAIGHT AHEAD, TURN R AND HOLD SHORT OF 28L. I COMPLIED. 1 ACFT LANDED, THE GND CTLR CLRED ME TO CROSS RWY 28L TO THE RAMP. FROM MY VANTAGE POINT IT APPEARED THAT TO CROSS RWY 28L I WOULD HAVE TO CROSS IT ON A DIAGONAL TO REACH THE OPPOSITE TAXIWAY ENTRANCE TO THE RAMP. AS I CROSSED RWY 28L THE CTLR CALLED AND TOLD ME TO GET OFF THE RWY AND WANTED TO KNOW WHERE I WAS GOING. I REPLIED THAT I HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS RWY 28L. THE CTLR RESPONDED THAT HE HAD WANTED ME TO CROSS THE RWY STRAIGHT AHEAD, NOT ON A DIAGONAL. AFTER I CROSSED THE RWY I REQUESTED FURTHER TAXI INSTRUCTION CLARIFICATION TO THE AVIATION RAMP. PROBLEM AROSE: FROM MY VANTAGE POINT BEFORE XING RWY 28L I COULD SEE THAT THE ENTRANCE TO THE RAMP WOULD TAKE ME ON A DIAGONAL ACROSS THE RWY. I BELIEVED AT THE TIME THAT I WOULD BE ENTERING THE RAMP AT TAXIWAY C2 FROM G. I WAS ACTUALLY AT F2 AND ENTERED AT C1 WHICH IS QUITE WIDE AND ON A DIAGONAL. MY HOLD POS WAS ACTUALLY F2, THE CTLR WANTED ME TO ENTER AT F1. FROM F2 ON THE S SIDE OF THE RWY I WAS NOT ABLE TO SEE THAT IT WAS POSSIBLE TO CROSS STRAIGHT AHEAD TO F1. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT RWY 28L HAS A LARGE CROWN FOR WATER RUNOFF WHICH BLOCKED THE VIEW OF THE OPPOSITE ENTRANCE. THE CTLR'S YELLING 'TO GET OFF THE RWY AND WHERE ARE YOU GOING' CREATED CONFUSION, UPON REALIZING WHAT THE ACTUAL INTENT WAS, I EXPEDITED. CTLRS SHOULD NOT YELL AT PLTS, THEY CAN BE FIRM BUT NOT WHERE SAFETY NOW BECOMES COMPROMISED BECAUSE PLTS OPERATING AT UNFAMILIAR ARPTS BECOME EVEN MORE CONFUSED. I HAD ONLY BEEN TO COLUMBUS ONCE BEFORE AND HAD NEVER LANDED ON RWY 23L. CTLR SHOULD HAVE SAID TAXI STRAIGHT AHEAD CROSS RWY 28L, INSTEAD OF JUST CROSS 28L.
