Narrative:

While returning from san jose to austin via phoenix, favorable winds allowed me to extend the flight to tucson, az. In VFR conditions, I received radar vectors for about the last 20 mi. My last assigned heading put me on a very wide (3-5 mi) left base for runway 29R (see chart). It was late afternoon, landing into the sun at an unfamiliar airport and after turning a 3-4 mi final, I asked for verification that I was cleared to land on 29R (?). The tower verified, and I failed to notice that 29L is displaced by about 3000 ft (1/2 mi) from the end of 229R. Mistaking the parallel taxiway on the right side, I landed on the first 2500 ft of the taxiway to the right of 29R. Recommendations: 1. Paint bold 'taxiway' on end of taxiway. 2. When pilots ask for verification of 29R (?), especially with low sun angle, the tower might advise regarding short 29L and long taxiway at 29R. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter states he noticed so many black marks on 'left' runway. Wondered why there were none on the 'right.' tower controller said it does happen occasionally. Most of time not reported. Someone saw reporter landing and called tower on frequency. FAA had contacted reporter. He volunteered to do remedial flight. Waiting.

Title: SMT LANDS ON TAXIWAY INSTEAD OF DISPLACED PARALLEL RWY.

Narrative: WHILE RETURNING FROM SAN JOSE TO AUSTIN VIA PHOENIX, FAVORABLE WINDS ALLOWED ME TO EXTEND THE FLT TO TUCSON, AZ. IN VFR CONDITIONS, I RECEIVED RADAR VECTORS FOR ABOUT THE LAST 20 MI. MY LAST ASSIGNED HDG PUT ME ON A VERY WIDE (3-5 MI) L BASE FOR RWY 29R (SEE CHART). IT WAS LATE AFTERNOON, LNDG INTO THE SUN AT AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT AND AFTER TURNING A 3-4 MI FINAL, I ASKED FOR VERIFICATION THAT I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON 29R (?). THE TWR VERIFIED, AND I FAILED TO NOTICE THAT 29L IS DISPLACED BY ABOUT 3000 FT (1/2 MI) FROM THE END OF 229R. MISTAKING THE PARALLEL TAXIWAY ON THE R SIDE, I LANDED ON THE FIRST 2500 FT OF THE TAXIWAY TO THE R OF 29R. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. PAINT BOLD 'TAXIWAY' ON END OF TAXIWAY. 2. WHEN PLTS ASK FOR VERIFICATION OF 29R (?), ESPECIALLY WITH LOW SUN ANGLE, THE TWR MIGHT ADVISE REGARDING SHORT 29L AND LONG TAXIWAY AT 29R. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR STATES HE NOTICED SO MANY BLACK MARKS ON 'L' RWY. WONDERED WHY THERE WERE NONE ON THE 'R.' TWR CTLR SAID IT DOES HAPPEN OCCASIONALLY. MOST OF TIME NOT RPTED. SOMEONE SAW RPTR LNDG AND CALLED TWR ON FREQ. FAA HAD CONTACTED RPTR. HE VOLUNTEERED TO DO REMEDIAL FLT. WAITING.
