Narrative:
I was in command of flight xx as we were cleared 'on to hold' on runway 01L at sfo. Both the first officer and I heard a transmission stating 'air carrier X, cleared for takeoff runway 01L.' after we were in the air at 500 ft, sfo tower told us we had not been cleared for takeoff, even though I acknowledged and repeated the controller's takeoff clearance. Tower at sfo stated 'it is no problem -- switch to departure and good day.' upon arrival in san I phoned sfo tower to talk with the supervisor. He stated that 'he did not even pull the tape, because it was no problem. Don't worry about it.' it could have been one of the bogus xmissions occurring on the west coast as of late.
