Narrative:
On taxi in from landing on runway 26R in atl, was advised to hold short of runway 26L which we acknowledged on tower frequency. At this time an medium large transport aircraft was cleared to takeoff and another aircraft was cleared into position to hold on runway 26L. We had reached the departure end of 26L and were holding short when the tower cleared us to cross runway 26L. An medium large transport air carrier aircraft was cleared to cross the same runway immediately after us, so I advanced power carefully to negotiate the slight incline in the taxiway just prior to crossing the departure end of runway 26L. As I was about to enter the runway, itself, to cross, a radio transmission came across my headset that said 'he's rolling!' I immediately looked to my left at the aircraft 'in position' and said that he was now slightly down the runway and had landing lights on. I immediately applied brakes and stopped the aircraft prior to the runway edge marking but beyond the hold short line. The medium large transport aircraft on takeoff roll aborted his takeoff and taxied off 26L at 'D' taxiway we requested additional clarification of our clearance and were told that we were cleared to cross and contact ground control on the other side. The flight taxied to the gate without further incident. Reports to the chief pilot's offices in atl and dfw yielded an internal investigation of cockpit voice recorder of the aborting aircraft and a review of the atl tower tapes. These sources revealed that the tower had issued clrncs to all 3 aircraft at the same time and that constant vigilance makes the system work. No identify has been attached to the 'he's rolling!' radio transmission, but it alerted me in time to help avert a potentially hazardous situation.

Title: CAPT OF ACR MLG ACFT WAS CLRED TO TAXI ACROSS RWY AT THE SAME TIME ANOTHER ACFT WAS CLRED AND ROLLING FOR TKOF ON THE SAME RWY.
Narrative: ON TAXI IN FROM LNDG ON RWY 26R IN ATL, WAS ADVISED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 26L WHICH WE ACKNOWLEDGED ON TWR FREQ. AT THIS TIME AN MLG ACFT WAS CLRED TO TKOF AND ANOTHER ACFT WAS CLRED INTO POS TO HOLD ON RWY 26L. WE HAD REACHED THE DEP END OF 26L AND WERE HOLDING SHORT WHEN THE TWR CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 26L. AN MLG ACR ACFT WAS CLRED TO CROSS THE SAME RWY IMMEDIATELY AFTER US, SO I ADVANCED PWR CAREFULLY TO NEGOTIATE THE SLIGHT INCLINE IN THE TAXIWAY JUST PRIOR TO XING THE DEP END OF RWY 26L. AS I WAS ABOUT TO ENTER THE RWY, ITSELF, TO CROSS, A RADIO XMISSION CAME ACROSS MY HEADSET THAT SAID 'HE'S ROLLING!' I IMMEDIATELY LOOKED TO MY L AT THE ACFT 'IN POS' AND SAID THAT HE WAS NOW SLIGHTLY DOWN THE RWY AND HAD LNDG LIGHTS ON. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED BRAKES AND STOPPED THE ACFT PRIOR TO THE RWY EDGE MARKING BUT BEYOND THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THE MLG ACFT ON TKOF ROLL ABORTED HIS TKOF AND TAXIED OFF 26L AT 'D' TAXIWAY WE REQUESTED ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION OF OUR CLRNC AND WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS AND CONTACT GND CTL ON THE OTHER SIDE. THE FLT TAXIED TO THE GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. RPTS TO THE CHIEF PLT'S OFFICES IN ATL AND DFW YIELDED AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION OF COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER OF THE ABORTING ACFT AND A REVIEW OF THE ATL TWR TAPES. THESE SOURCES REVEALED THAT THE TWR HAD ISSUED CLRNCS TO ALL 3 ACFT AT THE SAME TIME AND THAT CONSTANT VIGILANCE MAKES THE SYS WORK. NO IDENT HAS BEEN ATTACHED TO THE 'HE'S ROLLING!' RADIO XMISSION, BUT IT ALERTED ME IN TIME TO HELP AVERT A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS SITUATION.
