Narrative:
Holding short #2 for runway 18R in tpa, we were cleared by the tower to taxi around a commuter holding short #1, into position and hold. The runway was still wet from rains which had ended a few mins earlier, and as I attempted to make the left turn to line up on the centerline, the nose wheel started sliding on the painted threshold markings, and the plane wouldn't turn. I stopped the aircraft with the nose pointed to the southwest, and the nose wheel resting close to the right side runway edge stripe. At this point, I could have initiated a left turn back to the centerline, but I could see a runway light to the left of the nose and I wasn't sure if the nose wheel would miss the light in a 'blind' turn. With the coordination from the tower, we were able to solicit guidance from another air carrier now holding short. We returned to the centerline, received clearance, and took off. At no time was the aircraft off the concrete.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NEAR RWY EXCURSION AFTER TEMPORARY LOSS OF ACFT CTL, TAXIING TFC ONTO RWY.
Narrative: HOLDING SHORT #2 FOR RWY 18R IN TPA, WE WERE CLRED BY THE TWR TO TAXI AROUND A COMMUTER HOLDING SHORT #1, INTO POS AND HOLD. THE RWY WAS STILL WET FROM RAINS WHICH HAD ENDED A FEW MINS EARLIER, AND AS I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE L TURN TO LINE UP ON THE CTRLINE, THE NOSE WHEEL STARTED SLIDING ON THE PAINTED THRESHOLD MARKINGS, AND THE PLANE WOULDN'T TURN. I STOPPED THE ACFT WITH THE NOSE POINTED TO THE SW, AND THE NOSE WHEEL RESTING CLOSE TO THE R SIDE RWY EDGE STRIPE. AT THIS POINT, I COULD HAVE INITIATED A L TURN BACK TO THE CTRLINE, BUT I COULD SEE A RWY LIGHT TO THE L OF THE NOSE AND I WASN'T SURE IF THE NOSE WHEEL WOULD MISS THE LIGHT IN A 'BLIND' TURN. WITH THE COORD FROM THE TWR, WE WERE ABLE TO SOLICIT GUIDANCE FROM ANOTHER ACR NOW HOLDING SHORT. WE RETURNED TO THE CTRLINE, RECEIVED CLRNC, AND TOOK OFF. AT NO TIME WAS THE ACFT OFF THE CONCRETE.
