Narrative:
Helicopter was established inbound on practice VOR/DME approach descending from 2500 MSL to 2200 MSL when an small aircraft was observed 300-400 ft ahead and 50 ft below taking evasive action to avoid a collision. Helicopter immediately made a steep right turn. Small aircraft continued wbound. No communication between helicopter and small aircraft was established. Although ceiling and visibility were VFR, haze and air pollution made visual contact nearly impossible with the light colored airplane.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA HELI AND AN SMA HAD A NMAC IN THE TFC PATTERN. WX WAS VMC. THE HELI WAS MAKING A PRACTICE INST APCH.
Narrative: HELI WAS ESTABLISHED INBOUND ON PRACTICE VOR/DME APCH DSNDING FROM 2500 MSL TO 2200 MSL WHEN AN SMA WAS OBSERVED 300-400 FT AHEAD AND 50 FT BELOW TAKING EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID A COLLISION. HELI IMMEDIATELY MADE A STEEP R TURN. SMA CONTINUED WBOUND. NO COM BTWN HELI AND SMA WAS ESTABLISHED. ALTHOUGH CEILING AND VISIBILITY WERE VFR, HAZE AND AIR POLLUTION MADE VISUAL CONTACT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE WITH THE LIGHT COLORED AIRPLANE.
